Nadia and Carol

Nadia Comaneci is a Romanian gymnast (born on the 12th of November, 1961 in Gheorghe Gheorghiu Dej (now Onestiin Gheorghe Gheorghiu dej, now Onesti Romania). She was first person to reach a flawless 10 on an Olympic event. Bela Karrolyi who was the Romanian gymnastics trainer who became Comaneci's coach in later years, discovered her at age six. Her first competitive event was the national junior championships in which she was 13th place in 1969. In 1970, Comaneci took home the title. Her first competition in the international arena was in 1972 a pre-Olympic junior competition for communist-bloc nations she was awarded three gold medals. In 1973 and 1974 she was the all-around junior champion. Her first senior competition in 1975 she beat the Russian Lyudmila Turkishcheva. She was the five-time European champion, winning four golds and one argent. She won the American Cup at the New York City Olympics and was the first female in history to dismount the bars in parallel with the double backward salto. She started her career as a figure skater, performing alongside her sister Nina Wayne as part of the traveling entertainment shows called Ice Capades. Ice Capades featured performances of ice-skating with actors.
